About professor Barend Barentsen

I am Barend Barentsen and I am a professor of Labour Law at Leiden University, in the Netherlands. It is my mission to make my students as passionate about labour law as I am.

I Understand that labor law isn’t a preferred subject for many nonprofits, and that it can often be a significant source of stress for them. Especially in the Netherlands, certain rules regarding being a responsible employer can be rather complex. Therefore, making mistakes in this area can be expensive!

I want to help you avoid these mistakes, stop worrying about labour law, inspections, audits and whatnot, and focus instead on what matter the most to you: your mission and your core activities.

Suzanne and I made this course for you to help you comply with the law in a practical way that suits your context and size. Of course, I will also update you on the latest developments in the Netherlands, where changes are happening every year.

About Suzanne Bakker

Hi! I am Suzanne Bakker and I help nonprofits professionalize with their operational back end so that they can be a reliable and credible organization for their team and their (funding) partners.

I know what it is like to be a leader in a messy nonprofit facing big challenges. I know it is hard to focus your energy on your mission in this situation. I also understand the relief that comes when you have everything organized, and you no longer have to worry about the administrative aspects of your work.

I’ve played a key role in helping nonprofits establish effective contracting and HR practices. I’m known for my structured, practical, and action-oriented approach. I enjoy diving into tasks and facilitating progress, guiding individuals and organizations toward their goals.

I invited professor Barentsen to join this course as an instructor. He has collaborated with me and understands the specific information that nonprofits require. His passion lies in simplifying fundamental labor law concepts, making them accessible and easy to comprehend.

Throughout the course, we strongly encourage collaboration with your team. This not only helps gain their support from the beginning but also allows you to divide the workload effectively.

    How can I avoid overwhelm?

To avoid overwhelm, it’s essential to dedicate and schedule regular time for the course in your weekly calendar. Think of it as scheduling a meeting with yourself. Going through the modules and the lessons, you will see that the course has a very structured, step-by-step approach. If you have nothing in place and want to gain an overview, while developing your personnel policy, juts go through the modules from 1 to 5. If you have a specific situation to address, simply look up the relevant modules and lessons. If in doubt, post a question and we will help you find the best approach!

    And what does this cost?

The price of this course is $500. If you would hire a legal expert to do all the work for you, you would likely need to pay at least  $2,500 for advice, documents, checks and edits. Think about that for a moment!

But most of all, consider the peace of mind you’ll gain from not having to worry about contracting or your personnel policy anymore.

We also offer flexible payment options, including the choice to pay in two installments. You can explore our “Pay what you want” option, starting from $125.

    Is there a guarantee?

    A final note from me

HR and contracting challenges…..  It seems the smaller your nonprofit is, the bigger the challenges.

As a small organization, you have fewer resources. No expert in the house and no money to pay for one either. But because your dreams are big, you don’t want to get caught up in a silly mistake that can cost you your reputation and your money.

    Am I reading your mind?

No, I am just sharing with you about my own experiences in small nonprofits. Where I was the go-to person for such issues. Because I was doing finance, so you know, I was supposed to know about contracts. And oh yes, I had a law degree, so I should really know about it!

Sorry to say, my law degree was in European and International law. Nothing to do with nonprofit contracts and HR issues.

But like most of us in small nonprofits, I wanted to help and step in where needed. So I started learning about HR and contracting from books, courses, peers and practical experience. I invested so much time and effort in this. It felt very lonely most of the time, with no-one to discuss dilemmas with. But I plunged into it. And I learned a lot. Especially from working in different organizations and in different contexts and cultural backgrounds. Every mistake brought me closer to where I am now. Where people think this is all easy for me. And that I know everything (I don’t, of course). And where different nonprofits pay me for my advice and help on these (and other) management issues.

Now you know, it was not always like that. I had to work hard to get here.

This is why I made this course for you. So that you can learn from my experiences and avoid the mistakes I made. So that you don’t have to though the frustrations I have faced. And so that you can sort out ALL this stuff for your organization without worries and with a friendly helping hand (and formats and examples). This is also why I brought in Professor Barentsen for you. He can explain legal questions like no-one else I know, in a clear, caring and fun way! I want you to be able to learn from the best, a guy who became a professor in his field before he was 40 (which is considered young and an astonishing achievement in the Netherlands!).

You deserve the best so that you can be the best you can be. Bring your nonprofit to a new level, where you can have more impact toward realizing your dreams and ambitions!

I hope you will allow yourself to invest in this course. To invest time and commitment into it. So that you get the most out of our formats and live answers and help. This will ensure that you never need to feel alone, confused and nervous about HR and contracting matter again. Instead, these challenges will no longer be big obstacles for you, but just steppingstones to a higher level of professionalism. To free time so you can focus your attention on achieving your mission instead of on worrying about this stuff.

I wish that for you. I wish it for the world which will be better as you get better.

And I really hope we will see you inside our course!

    Best,

    Suzanne
