Raising money for salaries for your nonprofit team isn’t easy.

But it can be done.

The thing is, it’s not something that happens by accident.

You’ll need to prepare for it. You’ll need to have a plan for that. A strategy and an action plan.

You need a plan …

You need to know how you’ll keep your team satisfied so they will stay with your nonprofit. So you can be sure that your organisation can be reliable in creating output, results and impact.

So you’ll need to know what team you need to have in place. And what having that team will cost. And you’ll need to know your strategies to get the money to pay for that team. Finally, you’ll need to plan actions to go find that money.

Of course, this is not something that happens overnight, even with a plan.

But it all starts with a good plan in place.

and it starts with your strategic plan

This kind of plan should be part of your strategic plan.

  • What do you want to accomplish in the next 3 to 5 years?
  • How will you do that?
  • What are the resources you need for that?
  • How can you make sure you have these resources available?

Without a plan you cannot guarantee your work

Without a plan you may accidentally be able to get a grant that pays some salaries. So you may employ or hire people and pay them for their work.

But if that grant ends, you can no longer pay these people.

And you’ll go from paid staff or contractors doing project work to no people and no activities.

(Or activities only if these people have free time from their new paid job or assignment. Because, after all, your people also have obligations for their families and expenses and need an income.)

And the community you serve will be confused about your organisation’s intentions and commitment. They will feel lost: one moment you’re there and the next you’re not.

This is a scenario that creates a perception of your nonprofit as unreliable and not trustworthy. It’s something you want to avoid at all costs. Because if the people you serve don’t trust you, how can you do your work with them? And how can donors have confidence in you?

So having a reliable, professional nonprofit starts with having a stable team.

And a strategic plan will help you create (and maintain) that by helping you plan for raising money for salaries for your nonprofit team.
